Well Control Scenario Training

Client: Netherlands Oil & Gas Exploration and Production Association (NOGEPA)
Date: June 2011
Project scope: Develop a Well Control Scenario Training Programme for rig supervisory personnel

The Chief Counsel's Report published by the National Commission on the BP Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill and Offshore Drilling recommended that "In the future well control training should include simulations and drills for low-probability, high consequence emergency events"

Our Response

In response to Macondo, Montara and other reported accidents GeoTechInvest has led a team comprising of oil and gas company representatives, drilling contractors, service companies and together with the involvement of the International Well Control Forum (IWCF) and the Shell Simwell Training Centre have developed a concept training programme. The programme, run over two days, achieves the objective of providing rig supervisory personnel with training in simulated scenarios so they are better prepared when faced with the real event.

Pilot Course

To test the programme a pilot course was run at the Simwell Training Centre (9th and 10th June) involving delegates from Noble Drilling, TAQA, Wintershall, Total, GdF Suez and Shell. This has confirmed the viability of the training and GeoTechInvest now continues to work with NOGEPA and IWCF to seek the necessary support from other associations.

If you recognise the need for scenario based well control training that complements the existing IWCF certificate we would like to hear from you. Please contact us and we can discuss your specific needs.
